Death of the HOA by Ty Skeiky

Winner of Hand Drawn Award 2024

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA

‘Other than being the place of my upbringing, my family home carries no significance—particularly in terms of its architectural attributes. This drawing seeks to challenge the banal nature of my home by revisiting it through reassembly.

Various devices are deployed to perform constructive actions onto the house by recreating the construction conditions that exist today. Just as the house is an object of familiarity, each device holds a personal connection. As each device imposes an action onto the house, the house must provide the infrastructure required to facilitate each device's function even if it comes at the expense of the house's architectural integrity.’

Judges’ Comments

“I felt transported to the times when these sorts of drawings were used to tell a story of a building’s functions. It has an old time appliance graphics feel to it I really liked.”

Trees and Rocks the Shapeshifter by Alexander Warncke

Highly Commended for Hand Drawn Award 2024

Technische Universität Kaiserslautern, Germany

‘Nature was originally discovered as a place of resources. From it, humans created tools and built structures to suit their needs. As humans began to reshape nature in more technical and alterable ways, architecture drifted further away from its origins and thus leaving it disconnected with the earth.

Depicted is the essence of architecture: nature reformed.
Rock flattened so that you can walk on it. A tree carved so you can hang things from it. Wood cut to provide shelter.

Trees and Rocks - the Shapeshifter is a drawing about the relationship between nature and form. Materials take shape and function from their innate charectaristics. They remain honest and expressive.’

Shrine of the Tellurists, Isometric by Kai McKim

Commended for Hand Drawn Award 2024

Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL

‘Is DIY politics a valid architectural strategy for a future warmer world?

The project imagines and anticipates a world in which our dependence on spawling global supply chains has lessened, signalling society’s return to a more seasonal way of life. The project is a central hub for no-dig farming practices, a retelling of a village blacksmith and a union pub where a new DIY identity can flourish.

It aims to achieve all of this by the employment of a solar furnace. This aims to create fertile ground from which healthier social structures can emerge, the belief being that we need to heal our relationships with each other before we can meaningfully fix our relationship with the earth.’

Piazzal Del Westminster Palace by Liam George Hipple

Commended for Hand Drawn Award 2024

‘Florence Cathedral with a different colour scheme. What if the Cathedral was built with entirely different material? A British sand coloured limestone or a different tile to the traditional clay terracotta ones we're all so familiar with? Maybe it would look something like this. Pen and ink on watercolour paper. The drawing in then scanned into photoshop and rendered in colour using layers of colour underneath the ink layer.’

Coventry Civic by Max Bridge & Dimitar Zhelev

Commended for Hand Drawn Award 2024

University of Sheffield School of Architecture

'The image depicts a future plan for the old civic centre site within Coventry. The aerial, inspired by the centuries old depictions of the city, highlights the placement of a new centralised building complex at its heart, which can allow for cultural projects and organisations to meet, discuss and organise events for the people of Coventry as a legacy to its status of being a 2021 UK city of culture. The aerial depicts iconic architectural landmarks which outline the rich chapters of Coventry's history.’

Summit by Ian Chamberlain

Special Mention for Hand Drawn Award 2024

United Kingdom

‘The print "Summit" is inspired by the national Air services radar located at Clee Hill, Shropshire, UK. It forms a part of a broader collection of works that documents architectural forms associated with communication and investigation, emphasizing the shared aspects of inquiry and curiosity in both the arts and sciences.

Original Drawings have translated into the etching process, building on its inherent qualities to edit and build up layers of information, balance between the slow build up of the graphic image and subtle tonal variations of the intaglio process.’

‘Liminal (adj): between or belonging to two different places, states, etc. In the case of this drawing, light and dark, or being on the threshold of a new journey about to be made, or the quietness of the station before a train arrives. Stippled pen and ink on A3 paper. Adapted from a photograph by Vladislav Serov via Pexels.’

Architectural Collage (San Giorgio and the Container Ship) by Matteo Melioli

Special Mention for Hand Drawn Award 2024

Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL

‘In my architectural collages, building’s fragments are drawn together, superimposed and overlapped. The resulting space is a hybrid architecture that contains other pieces of architecture, all them transformed by means of free associations. I derived this technique from the late baroque Invenzione, a pictorial gender born in Venice and Rome at the end of the XVIII Century and characterized by the collisive, ambiguous or sometimes exotic juxtaposition of real and imaginary places.’
