The Archatographic Map of the Incomplete Landscape on Pedra Branca by Eugene Tan

Winner of Drawing of the Year Award 2024

National University of Singapore

‘Inspired by the medieval mappamundi, the drawing expresses the landscape on Pedra Branca through aerial views and multiple elevations. It's circular composition constructs the surrounding context. Inviting viewers to imagine themselves in the middle of the map, looking from the inside out to the neighbouring islands; simultaneously, it also presents the seasonal and cyclical nature of the site and its rich ecology. By allowing viewers to embody being at Pedra Branca, the drawing seeks to bridge the distance that separates the viewer from this protected island. In doing so, it seeks to deconstruct the political narrative, and to change the way we can care for this beautiful island.’

Projective Revitalization: Architecture Prosthetics for Spare Capacity by Ewa Roztocka & Tengku Sharil Bin Tengku Abdul Kadir

Highly Commended for Drawing of the Year Award 2024

Princeton University, USA

‘Architecture is often suspended between obsolescence and permanence: demolished if considered invaluable, museumified if viewed as culturally significant. This results in immense cultural and material waste. Typical remedies fall short. Preservation inhibits accommodation of change and adaptive reuse is overly specific and myopic. The project pioneers an alternative method called 'Projective Revitalization' that resuscitates obsolete building structures by strengthening their capabilities to adapt to future change. This drawing is a 50-year projected future archive of the last office park building remaining in Neptune, NJ. It is observed as a cultural artifact of the pre-digital work era that retains value through technological adaptation.’

Lost in the fog by Romain Brunas

Highly Commended for Drawing of the Year Award 2024

France

‘Architectural renderings in fog have always fascinated me, and I find this kind of visual to be a beautiful allegory. The suggestion of an architecture by revealing it partially... Leaving the imagination to finalize the rest of the project… As often is my state of mind before starting a project.’

The Boston Snow Council - A Seasonal Snow Structure by Henry Aldridge

Commended for Drawing of the Year Award 2024

Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL

‘Depicted over twelve months, this image shows the growth and melting away of the Boston Snow Council, a structure that is built every year to host city politics and is formed from snow forming around infrastructures built into the plaza. It hosts campaigns and council sessions alongside a snow mass that is constantly morphed by both Bostonians and the changing environment of the city itself.

With climate change, the volume and nature of snowfall in Boston is changing. The project puts Boston politicians, who are to some extent responsible for changes to local climate and pollution, inside a snow structure. In this way, they are in a building of their own making, as the snow responds to warm microclimates or air pollution.’

My Portfolio Cover by Yutong Wang

Special Mention for Drawing of the Year Award 2024

Chongqing University, China

‘This image was created primarily using Enscape and Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo. In my opinion, a good portfolio cover is both a platform to showcase your projects and level, as well as a summary and review of your past learning. Therefore, I tried to build a scene model of a graduation solo exhibition in Rhino, in which I arranged the most worthy drawings in my portfolio.’
