The Enterprise of ‘EU-topia by Tyler Thurston
Winner of the Environmental Award 2020
‘The enterprise of ‘EU-topia’ reinforces the European Union’s strength in unity by enabling children to care for and nurture the world’s most important resource; water. The children harvest the energy created between fresh and salt water during bio-desalination as a new renewable source of energy.’
Judges’ thoughts
“Tyler’s drawing is an immersive and energised piece which suggests several possible narratives surrounding the environment. It was refreshing to see such an illustrative drawing that so strongly portrays issues of the environment, especially the importance of our oceans.
The project focuses on elevating childrens’ position in sustainability, something close to our reality with the school strikes these past years. A truly creative and powerful response to identify a number of important issues.”

‘In a future where the fight for climate change has been lost, the city must reflect the new reality, embracing sea level rise to improve the lives of its citizens. This is a vision if in an ideal situation that the views and visions of immigrants were incorporated into the development of Liverpool and Birkenhead. Using traditional and sustainable construction methods, a new bamboo landscape will grow out of the River Mersey, albeit vertical and on water.’
Judges’ thoughts
“This project beautifully illustrates a solution to a future that people around the world face. With iconic elements of Liverpool city in the background and solidity of lost architecture that the lightweight structures have emerged from, you are guided down the new main street with a new perspective on the city. Particularly engaging, the animation of people continuing to go about their daily lives in this new environment, successfully demonstrates the scale of the towering structures.”

‘The unregulated growth of the space industry could have real implications for Earth and its orbit regarding satellite congestion, geo-political conflict, the exploitation of resources for materials and energy and other environmental concerns. The carbon emissions produced by data centres, along with the resources needed to facilitate the launches of satellites have caused tremendous impacts on the environment. We imagine “Node 1” as a self-sustained agency for all space activities, dealing with complex systems such as earth observation missions, big data storage in space and spacecraft manufacturing and launching.’
Judges’ thoughts
“Thanat and Joana’s work explores an often forgotten environmental impact: space exploration. A really captivating, strong perspective view directs the eye to question the structure in space. The pieces littered above Earth cleverly represent a further issue and add an element of chaos to a very structured image. It was refreshing for this project to be addressing an important but less discussed environmental issue.’
