‘Standing between the technical aspects of a typical architectural illustration and the liveliness of the future activities that would take place, the drawings find a way to communicate not only the tectonic quality but also the life of the future building. The spaces, their connections, their functions, and their spatial compositions as well as the many movements of people are thoroughly depicted.’
Judges’ thoughts
“The detail and energy that is visible in these drawings is outstanding. Quy Phu’s ability to display such vibrant settings through black and white drawings really is impressive. The legibility, despite the density, demonstrates the skill that Quy Phu has in creating these incredible drawings.”

Marco Del Roio, Giovanna de Simone + Matteo Amicarella
Highly Commended for the Architectural Award 2020
Judges’ thoughts
“A masterclass in linework, this piece shows off the power of mastering the medium used. With simply a line drawing the creators have achieved great legibility, character and interest through inhabiting a strong composition and subtle moments of detail giving focus to the activities dotted across the piece. The layering of detail and lineweights is fundamental to the success of this drawing.
The people and vegetation within the drawing brings the piece to life, the soft shadows pulls the piece together with a clever use of layers. The judges felt this drawing was an outstanding example which deserved to be highly commended for its success as an architectural drawing.“

‘Our proposal aims to empower the residents by providing them with a basic 10’x10’x10’ framework for mass customization and construction over the years. Residents will have the power and capability to configure their houses to suit different family types and various programs created by the residents such as a meat market, a church or a school can be found scattered all over the block.’
Judges’ thoughts
“The vibrancy of Hanzhang and Phang’s drawing is really refreshing to see and stood out amongst other drawings this year. The creators' choice to be bold makes for a striking piece, particularly with the strong geometry.”

‘Re-industrialising the Tin Coast; A new vernacular of industrial building, sculpted from the landscape, champions the archetypal Cornish exports – pasties and pilchards – alongside a new industry, the production of porter, a dark roasted ale.’
Judges’ thoughts
“Amelia has created a really interesting and unique piece of artwork. With closer inspection, the technique and image itself is outstanding. The depth achieved through the pointillism style truly deserves to be commended.
Amelia’s drawing shows great restraint, control and sophistication. The diagonal composition makes for an aesthetically pleasing arrangement and attributes to the piece’s success in conveying the geometric quality of the architectural forms created through the varying tones and shades of the dotted effect.”

‘Outside Inside House for Isolation. Bringing more activity inside a boat house.’
Judges’ thoughts
“There’s a richness to Clausen’s drawings which demonstrates how exciting line drawings can be. Retaining legibility in such a detailed drawing is an impressive feat and one that Clausen deserves to be commended for. There is a real sense of human scale and reliability to the moments within the drawing, the wealth of textures makes for a piece like that of Atelier Bow-Wow’s where the reader can almost feel the materiality through the line drawings which is a fantastic quality to achieve without colour and without overwhelming the whole aesthetic.
We found the number of more classical architectural drawings submitted this year refreshing alongside the other categories, with many examples first class architectural drawings. Collectively, the finalists’ drawings in the architectural category illustrate the power of mastering the medium your working in and the effectiveness of not overcomplicating the means in which you wish to convey your projects. This simplicity is harder than it looks.
