The Suburbs by Pavel Babienko

Commended for Visualisation Award 2022

‘I had a strange dream today... We, the human race, are strong, wise, unwavering. We have surrounded ourselves with cutting edge technology, we have almost touched the stars. We, like gods, have created our own artificial intelligence. We have become gods ourselves! But somehow we got so caught up in travelling into the future that we forgot about the past. We've forgotten who we really are, where we were born and grew up. The smell of the earth after the rain, the rustling of the trees, the singing of the birds... We've seen it all in the old movies. I'm afraid we're no longer aware of what's really important... I'm just a grump. Was a bad dream, nothing else. It's not real and it's not happening... it's not going to happen, is it?’

In the contemporary urban fabric, infrastructures are usually preferred to be concealed within. Architectural space as such is considered the anchor of infrastructure to be orientated. In contrast, within rural or outback areas, infrastructure is considered as the dominant structure due to the low dwelling density. In such case, Infrastructure is the anchor of architectural space or canopy to be developed.

The project proposes an novelty energy generating and transporting infrastructure in an Australian outback context. The inhabitable 'shelf' allows both designed modules and locally found discards to be densely inserted in a ad-hoc manner, allowing the outback context to be celebrated with low waste-impact.’
