Kowloon Walled City by Jimmy Wong

Winner of Hand Drawn Award 2025

United Kingdom

Inspired by Greg Girard’s 1987 photograph “Kowloon Walled City—Tung Tau Tsuen Road facade,” this pen and ink piece captures the dense and chaotic energy of the infamous Hong Kong settlement, before its demolition in 1993. The view, taken from the northern edge of the complex, highlights the ad hoc layering of apartments and businesses, marked by uneven floor levels, dense signage, and a maze of overhangs and balconies. While the Walled City was often portrayed as a lawless slum, this perspective reveals its vibrant inner life: a self-built, self-organised community full of energy and resilience. Through intricate linework, the piece captures both the architectural chaos and the human presence behind it.

Urban Heights: Stippling Amsterdam’s High-Rise Facades by Bhagyashri Khandare

Highly Commended for Hand Drawn Award 2025

India

This stippling drawing, created in one-point perspective over six months, captures the depth and rhythm of Amsterdam’s high-rise architecture. Millions of ink dots shape the facades, emphasizing intricate window details and structural precision. The controlled stippling technique enhances contrast, creating a dynamic play of light and shadow that draws the eye toward the vanishing point. Inspired by the city's evolving skyline, this piece reflects both the technical mastery of architecture and the patience required in stippling—where every dot contributes to a sense of scale, depth, and perspective.

Temple of the Gods by Christina Vogiatzis

Commended for Hand Drawn Award 2024

Canada

To stand beneath the celestial open dome of Rome's Pantheon is an experience of extraordinary wonder. One is rendered speechless as they behold the the intricate, otherworldly ornamentation that richly adorns every inch of the space.

The experience of illustrating such a place is perhaps even more profound. In sketching, every complex detail rises to the spotlight to be observed and analyzed: the layers of precious stone, the shadowed coffers adorning the dome, the flowing elegance of the Corinthian capitals, the breathtaking harmony of its geometry, symmetry, and rhythm. The sketch was completed over the course of several hours throughout several days, unrushed - a kind of dialogue with history.

BLS Train Workshop by Quentin Ferry

Commended for Hand Drawn Award 2025

Switzerland

The new workshop buildings fit into the tradition of carefully designed infrastructure buildings. In a sensitive location between the settlement and the landscape, buildings are to be constructed that blend naturally into their surroundings despite their large dimensions.

The entire building envelope, the façade and the roof will be made of prefabricated timber elements, with the exception of the large entrance gates. The arched beams of the roof will be made from glulam, the rest from local softwood. Inside, the wooden surfaces will be glazed in a light colour to further optimise the use of daylight and create a friendly working atmosphere. The façade is designed as a solid timber façade made of board stack elements.

The Party That Was by Joe Dempsey

Special Mention for Hand Drawn Award 2024

United Kingdom

The Party That Was captures the lingering energy of a gathering, an imprint of human presence after the moment has passed. Rather than a static scene, the drawing embodies movement—glasses knocked askew, scattered cutlery, remnants of conversation in the form of marks and scribbles. Inspired by the chaos and beauty of human interaction, I wanted to depict the table as a living record of the evening, where laughter, gestures, and movement have left their trace.

An Ear to Ambience - Plate 1: Forest Approach by Kanto Maeda

Drawn on cartridge paper using pencil, charcoal and printed digital drawing, modelled in Rhino. 42.6x60cm. The drawing represents the atmosphere of a forest in Dalkeith in Scotland, and my proposal for a 'Sound Pavillion' - a conical metal structure with a walkway, suspended over a river, designed to harness the sound of the water, while allowing an individual to stand over the river and listen.
