The Ministry of Petrifying by Max Bridge

Winner of Architectural Award 2021

The University of Sheffield School of Architecture

‘The Ministry of Petrifying acts as a living, changing, growing embodiment and identity of the people of Leeds. A challenge to the current automated - 'soulless' - archiving of births, deaths and marriages whilst visually projecting the weight of ancestry, origin and ideals of the Leeds through the old forgotten English process of 'petrifying' objects.’

Judges’ comments

The judges were impressed with the depth and ambition of the rendered section as a drawing. “The most successful architectural drawings are those that are instrumental mechanisms in conveying and truly capturing the qualities of space, adjacencies and here Bridge does that with great skill.”

The judges admired the aesthetic quality of the imagery, use of colour, atmosphere and light to create an emotive architectural representation. “As an architectural drawing, the rendered section communicates an array of internal environments and their relationships to each other, from floor arrangements to the elevations of the external facades. The imagery gives a strong sense of experiencing the architecture, materiality and conveys how those spaces may feel. You can zoom into a great variety of detailed moments and there is a strong sense of underpinning narrative which strengthens Bridge’s architectural representation.”

HIGHLY COMMENDED JANIS HO

HIGHLY COMMENDED JANIS HO

From Play to Community by Janis Ho

Highly Commended for Architectural Award 2021

The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL

‘The project addresses the decline in play spaces and reintroduces the concept of authorship into the design. Inspired by the concept of a blanket fort where children and adults collaborate to build structures by reimagining common objects as building material. It explores the possibility of creating a caring neighbourhood by integrating children and therefore the community back into the urban fabric.’

Judges’ comments

“Ho’s drawing is a wonderful example of how hybridity can bring a new dimension to a drawing and strengthen its ability to communicate further qualities.” The judges enjoyed the drawing’s originality and playful hybridity as a panoramic drawing that conveys a variety of architectural qualities through a continuous drawing. “The drawing seamlessly combines not only a physical model but also rendered elevations and perspectives, all of which are successfully interwoven together through 2D linework.”

The judges commended the drawing’s ability to tie together what could have been several drawings to convey the architecture and quality of spaces, it was praised for being a fantastic and original standout hybrid drawing.

COMMENDED GRAY BURKE

Documentation of Daily Life by Gray Burke

Commended for Architectural Award 2021

University of Miami

‘This drawing depicts the documentation of a Venetian apartment. In the documentation of the plan, you can see footprints on the stairs, the preparation of soup for dinner, a humble phone charging, and much much more.’

Pre-EDEN Dystopia by Ahmed Tareef

Special Mention for Architectural Award 2021

‘Life of Ed before the existence of EDEN, in an era of pandemic, the world feels empty, pale, and lifeless. The drawing tries to capture Ed's depression while walking aimlessly down the empty urban street, arms loose, back hunched, and feeling blue.’

Streetscapes of Inwood by Shuang He

Special Mention for Architectural Award 2021

Columbia University

‘East Inwood houses a large dominican immigrant population with lower than average income and education levels. 207th street is the busiest commercial street at the heart of Inwood, adjacent to the Terminal 1 subway station. Low-rise strip malls combined with street vendors, artists, and commuters form a very organic, jig-jagging and idiosyncratic streetscape that defines the dynamic social scenes of East Inwood.’

Occupation of the Anti-Gentrification Frontier by Tom Gardner

Special Mention for Architectural Award 2021

Royal College of Art

‘The Anti-Gentrification Centre facilitates and demonstrates an array of methods based on past events of successful resistances against gentrification and strategies that are seemingly lacking in today’s forms of anti-gentrification activism. The occupied section depicts the “Anti-Gentrification” collective inserted into the MVRDV ‘Villa VPRO’ building forming the “Anti-Gentrification Centre”. Each space defines forms of resistance to gentrification. These are strategies deemed successful in the past or are proposals for a new method for resistance.’
