Authors: ‘The brutal and stoic piers of Rudolph Hall belie the mayhem contained within. Even a single year within Rudolph’s grasp is a hazard, and three years can be nearly fatal. This drawing endeavors to map out the most common pitfalls: from review anxiety to carpet burn, from resin fumes to broken dreams. Through the convention of a cut-away axon, this drawing shows all of the activities of Rudolph Hall simultaneously. This format emphasizes the many overlapping stimulations, passions, and ambitions of the occupants. Each narrative is emphasized evenly, piecing together the holistic chaos in the life of a student at the Yale School of Architecture.’

Judges’ thoughts

“A wonderfully immersive axonometric drawing, we were impressed with the confidence and use of colour, filling the architecture with life and activity. The drawing’s monumental quality derives from the use of such a classical architectural drawing technique, creatively carving into the belly of the building. The fact it depicts the Yale School Architecture is the ‘icing on the cake’.”

Author: ‘The Built Pension is a radical retirement-village model in Leyton, that focuses on empowering autonomous urban retirees in determining their personalised retirement. Instead of defaulting to an inexplicable focus on leisure as the means of living, urban retirees are free to position themselves on a spectrum that best represents their individual dispositions, stretching between leisure and profession. To this end, industrial and retired communities collaborate on a series of retrofitted addendums on top of existing single-storey masonry industrial warehouses, constructed in a gradual, open-ended fashion.’

Judges’ thoughts

“As a whole piece the drawing conveys a real energy, the restrained but bold use of colour draws you in to see the individual elements which reveal activities and qualities allowing the viewer to continually discover the different moments and spaces.

We wanted in particular to commend the clever layering that combines an array of architectural representations into a single, unique hybrid-drawing to express the architectural qualities of the project.“

Author: ‘The Amphibious Living for the Later Life is a building for a specific community group, people who live on canal boats in London. As people grow older and their mobility decreases living on a canal boat becomes very hard. This project imagines a retirement home for a boating community in Camden, enabling people to continue living in their own boats for as long as possible, while remaining individual characters and interest of the occupants.’

Judges’ thoughts

“There is a beautifully controlled simplicity to this drawing which captured our attention. A sophisticated colour palette and strong composition allows this sectional drawing to effectively convey an intriguing architectural proposition. We liked that the users and their activities become a primary focus of the drawing complimenting the architecture making for a well balanced very commendable drawing.”
